D-Mannose is a type of simple sugar. It occurs naturally in a variety of fruits and vegetables; more notably the cranberry, but is also present in others such as blueberries, peaches, apples, pears and oranges. There is increasing amounts of research into the uses of D-Mannose. The main focus of these studies are on the potential as a treatment for UTIs (urinary tract infections). Traditionally people have often been told to drink cranberry juice when symptoms of UTIs begin. The high DMannose content in cranberries is most likely the beneficial reason for this.As effective as some antibiotics at eliminating and preventing recurring UTI infections…UTIs occur when bacteria infects the urinary tract, this includes the kidneys, bladder and urethra. The most common UTI affects a persons bladder and is called Cystitis. Studies suggest that D-Mannose can hinder and prevent the bacteria from adhering to the bladder lining.UTIs can cause symptoms including the frequent urge to urinate, pain whilst urinating, cloudy or foulsmelling urine, and particularly in older people it can cause tiredness, shakiness and confusion. It is common for UTIs to be recurrent, particularly in women, and this can have a considerable impact on quality of life. Growing research suggests that D-Mannose has the potential to prevent theirrecurrence, as well as in treating active UTIs.Inhibits the adhesion of bacteria to the bladder lining – helping reduce infection risk…D-Mannose is a naturally occurring sugar molecule, a monosaccharide that is closely related to glucose, however it not metabolised or transformed into glycogen to be stored for energy.
